Description

JOB SUMMARY

Supervises work crews within various assignments of park maintenance, irrigation, landscaping, mowing, litter removal and sports fields to ensure construction, repair and maintenance of parks and other Town facilities/properties are completed; includes operating various pieces of equipment and performing functions varying from supervisory duties to participating in manual labor necessary to completing assigned tasks.

EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE

  1. High School Diploma or GED, and five (5) years’ experience in Parks and Recreation or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Supervisory experience preferred.
  3. Must pass a pre-employment drug screening and/or post-offer physical exam.

 

LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES

  1. Valid Class B CDL license or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
  2. Texas Department of Agriculture Non Commercial Chemical Applicator license preferred.
  3. Texas Commission on Environmental Quality Irrigation License preferred.
  4. Certified Playground Safety Inspector preferred.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  1. Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently. 
  2. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or authorities, or members of the local business community.
  3. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  4. Good written and verbal communication skills are essential.

 

OTHER SKILLS & ABILITIES

  1. Ability to establish and meet deadlines.
  2. Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision.
  3. Ability to establish and maintain good relationships with supervisors and other personnel.
  4. Demonstrate a willingness to perform duties in a team environment.
  5. Knowledge and skill in the use of a computer.
  6. Skills coordinating and managing multiple projects and/or assignments.
  7. Knowledge of the following skills: carpentry, electrical, or plumbing.
  8. Knows safety hazards and applicable safety precautions necessary in the performance of duties.
  9. Training for the application of chemicals preferred.
  10. Installation and repairs of park irrigation systems preferred.
  11. Set-up facilities and/or park areas for special events.
  12. Demonstrate a willingness to perform duties in a team environment.
  13. Knowledge in reading, interpreting, applying, and explaining Federal, State, & Local laws, codes, ordinances, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished by management in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to operate various machines and/or equipment; and reach with hands and arms.  The employee frequently is required to talk and hear.  The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 80 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT              

The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Outdoor environment; exposure to conditions of construction and Parks and Recreation project sites including loud noises, dust, heavy vehicles and equipment; exposure to inclement weather; exposure to traffic and other hazards while conducting field inspections; exposure to moving vehicles and equipment, slippery surfaces, and other related conditions.

               

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Recommends and provides training to new employees.
  2. Counsels subordinates regarding disciplinary and other problems.
  3. Completes daily work reports, equipment safety reports and other forms as needed.
  4. Must be able to work overtime (weekends, special events and athletic events) as needed.
  5. Works with parks maintenance crews in the field to complete tasks.
  6. Determines and recommends material and/or equipment needs such as pipe, sprinkler heads or valve fittings.
  7. Schedules work and prescribes work procedure such as prioritizing daily work activities.
  8. Reports to Parks Supervisor daily on completed assignments for the day.
  9. Has knowledge of the layout of athletic fields, (soccer, football, softball, baseball).
  10. Coordinates athletic game field scheduling.
  11. Must be able to communicate with the public, youth and adult sports organizations.
  12. Assists with the preparation of the budget.
  13. Coordinates with other Departments on large projects.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned.
