Description
JOB SUMMARY
Fleet Specialist will be responsible for the repair, servicing and preventative maintenance of gasoline, alternate fuels, and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment. Focus will be given to the following: Fire department apparatus, ambulances, law enforcement vehicle repair, and medium to large trucks, sedan/light duty automobiles and construction equipment.  The selected candidate is required to provide typical hand tools for the position with a technician of five years’ experience in the fleet maintenance industry as determined by the Fleet Manager.
 
EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE
1.            Trained in the use of a variety of machines, including, but not limited to, personal computers, telephone, calculators,      facsimile machine and copiers, on line service manuals as well as paper service manuals.
2.            Must be familiar with automotive shop diagnostic tools; ODB II Diagnostics Scanner, refrigerant recycler, measuring tools; micrometers, calipers, digital multi meter, tire machine and balancer, welder and cutting torch.
3.            Graduate of a certified trade school or five (5) years’ experience in the automotive industry.
4.            Must be familiar with and utilize shop safety measures.
5.            Must have a high school diploma or GED.
6.            Must have some experience in automotive parts ordering and inventory with some experience in industrial parts.
7.            Preferences will be given to those candidates with factory training and verifiable experience.
8.            Preferences will be given to those proficient in MIG and Shielded Metal Arc welding techniques as well as metal cutting and fabricating experience.
             
LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES
1.            Must be bondable.
2.            Valid Texas CDL. (Minimum Class B Commercial Driver’s License required.)
3.            Must have a minimum of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications A-5 Automobile Brakes, A-4 Suspension and Steering or T-4 Truck Brakes and T-5 Truck Suspension and Steering.
4.            Have ability to obtain within one year, one of the following;
EVT Law Enforcement
Level I Fire Apparatus
Level I Ambulance Technician certifications.
5.            Must have ability to obtain additional (ASE) and/or Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certifications.
6.            Preference will be given to a Level one or greater Fire Apparatus, Law Enforcement and/or Ambulance certification.
7.            Preference given to any combination of ten (10) ASE and/or EVT certifications. Containing A-4, A-5 or  T-4, T-5
8.            Must be willing and motivated to obtain and keep current all technical certifications.
9.            Refrigerant reclaiming license. (Or obtain in six months)
10.          Must have ability to use Ron Turley Associates (RTA) or like fleet maintenance Software.
11.          Fuel inventory management and maintenance of equipment consisting of: Card reader, software, and fuel site.
 
LANGUAGE SKILLS
1.            Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
2.            Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers and community.
3.            Good written and verbal communication skills are essential.

10.          Experience in a municipal fleet maintenance shop operation is preferred.
11.          Experience installing aftermarket and Public Safety Emergency lighting preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to operate various machines, drive vehicles and/or equipment; and reach with hands and arms.  The employee frequently is required to talk and hear.  The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to (80) eighty pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Primarily a vehicle/equipment maintenance facility environment. Shop conditions; outdoor environment; exposure to conditions of vehicle maintenance; including loud noises, dust, heavy vehicles and equipment; exposure to inclement weather; exposure to traffic and other hazards while conducting field inspections and repairs; exposure to moving vehicles and equipment, slippery surfaces, and other related conditions.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
1.          Diagnoses, installs, services and maintains the town’s fleet of vehicles / equipment including mechanical, electrical, computerized circuitry, refrigeration, ignition, transmission and transaxle, brake, fuel and exhaust systems.
2.            Performs extensive preventive maintenance and repairs on Fire apparatus including ambulances, all makes and models such as Pierce, Ford, GMC, Dodge, Caterpillar, New Holland, Target, Freightliner etc…
3.            Diagnoses and repairs drivability, anti lock brake, air bag and other computer controlled malfunctions of a late model vehicle, light, medium or heavy duty.
4.            Diagnoses, removes and completely rebuilds gasoline and diesel engines.
5.            Diagnoses and repairs suspension and steering malfunctions.
6.            Diagnoses and repairs hydraulic and air brake malfunctions as well as replacing wear parts.
7.            Diagnoses and repairs cooling system malfunctions; radiator leak, replace heater core, repairs fluid leaks, over heating problems, cooling fan, fan clutch etc…
8.            Diagnoses and repairs air conditioning and heating malfunction; refrigerant leaks, replace A/C compressor etc…
9.            Diagnoses, repairs and / or replaces transmissions, clutches, pressure plates, throw out bearing and PTOs.
10.          Maintains records of time and material used on the job, documents equipment condition and status, updates any changes and submits log as required, informs supervisor of materials needed to perform a job.
11.          Performs other duties as assigned.
12.          Performs on-call in rotation with other Fleet staff.
