JOB SUMMARY
 
Under general direction of the GIS Manager, the GIS intern develops, maintains and updates various data layers, and databases in the Town’s geographic information system, prepares maps and projects as directed.
 
EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE
 
  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Geography or related field or in process of completion
  2. Knowledge of and use with ESRI’s ArcGIS 10.x software.
  3. Preferred knowledge of ArcPad 10, and Trimble GPS unit.
  4. Must pass a pre-employment drug screen, criminal background check, MVR check, and polygraph test.
 
LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES
 
 
  1. Must be bondable.
  2. Valid Texas Operator’s Driver’s License
 
LANGUAGE SKILLS
 
 
  1. Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
  2. Skill in effective oral and written communications.
  3. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or authorities, or members of the local business community.
  4. Good verbal and written communication skills are essential.

The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to operate various machines and/or equipment; and reach with hands and arms.  The employee frequently is required to talk and hear.  The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT
             
The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  Primarily office environment.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS  
 
  1. Conducts geographical research and analysis.
  2. Conducts field work utilizing Trimble GPS.
  3. Works with Public Works personnel to create and update Water Utilities.
  4. Updates complex enterprise spatial data layers using GIS.
  5. Assists users in developing meaningful GIS maps and analysis.
  6. Ensures that updated spatial layers are available to users ArcReader or ArcView
  7. Performs format conversions or projection transformations.
  8. Fulfills spatial data information requests.
  9. Prepares presentation-quality maps.
  10. Continually updates skills and knowledge to maintain a high level of proficiency in the latest technologies in GIS.
  11. Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential.
  12. Perform research, compile, and analyze data for special projects and reports as directed by the GIS Coordinator, along with interacting effectively with town personnel.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.
