JOB SUMMARY

Under direct supervision, the purpose of the position is to perform semi-skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and operation of the city’s water/wastewater utility systems, lines, lift stations, pump stations, and associated equipment. Employees in this class are engaged in the construction and repair of water and wastewater mains and attendant devices. Work includes connection of fittings, excavation for the installation and repair of lines, the testing and monitoring of water pressure, job-site restoration tasks, and all other water and wastewater utility related tasks. EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or GED; with six (6) months of previous experience that demonstrates ability to fulfill the physical requirements of the essential functions; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

 

LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES

  1. Must be bondable.
  2. Requires ability to acquire grade “D” water certification from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality within 12 months (1 year) of hire date.
  3. Requires ability to acquire a class “A” CDL - with Tanker Endorsement within 12 months (1 year) of hire date.
  4. Work Zone Safety Certification within 12 months (1 year) of hire date.

  1. Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
  2. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers and community.
  3. Good written and verbal communication skills are essential.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to operate various machines, drive vehicles and/or equipment; and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to (80) eighty pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Outdoor environment; exposure to conditions of construction and Public Works project sites including loud noises, dust, heavy vehicles and equipment; exposure to inclement weather; exposure to traffic and other hazards while conducting field inspections; exposure to moving vehicles and equipment, slippery surfaces, and other related conditions.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Assists work crews in installation and maintenance of distribution and collection lines, to include the operation of various equipment as directed, i.e., jet machines, tapping machines, water/sewer locators, trash pumps, trucks and organizes sludge removal / driving Towns roll off truck..
  2. Assists in conducting various repairs for distribution and collection systems of the city, i.e., leaks, main breaks, manholes, faulty valves, broken fire hydrants.
  3. Flushes lines in correcting water/wastewater stoppages and blockages in mains.
  4. Installs and/or replaces water taps, water meters, meter boxes, lines, valves, and related attendant devices.
  5. Monitors SCADA system, to include remote monitoring when functioning on call.
  6. Conducts bacteriological, residual, and other sample testings’ and readings in monitoring pressures, and chemical/contaminant levels to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
  7. Performs routine maintenance on lift stations, pumps, motors, injectors, chlorinators, fire hydrants, and other components of the city’s distribution and collection systems.
  8. Performs various preventive maintenance duties, i.e., lubricating pumps and motors, cleaning wet wells and lift stations.
  9. Addresses complaints concerning high or low water pressure, contaminated water, residential line stoppages, overflows.
  10. Assists with maintenance and monitoring of parts and supplies inventory.
  11. Ensures the safe operating conditions per work site, i.e., traffic hazards, equipment operation, required barricades, road and site areas.
  12. Restores/maintains work sites, i.e., mowing well lots; sod, soil and plant restoration.
  13. Reads meters for billing purposes as directed.
  14. Participates in knowledge and skills development, i.e., learning to test meters on meter test bench.
  15. Incumbent will be required to be On-Call during certain periods and respond to work orders and requests after hours and on weekends.
