JOB SUMMARY

Under direct supervision of the Stormwater Crew Leader, the purpose of the position is to assist with manual drainage maintenance work for the town. Employees exercise appropriate safety precautions in operating assigned equipment to ensure personal, public, and personnel safety. Position is responsible working independently or as part of a work crew, depending on nature of assigned tasks to clean, construct, repair and maintain the Town’s curbs, gutters, inlets, outfalls, debris-separators, stormwater, manholes, ditches, drainage systems, and other related public infrastructure.  Position requires Essential employee to perform emergency and on-call duty.  The employee performs related work as directed and provides assistance to the Street and Solid Waste Division as directed. EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE

  1. High school diploma or GED
  2. Six (6) months of previous experience that demonstrates ability to fulfill the physical requirements of the essential functions; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  1. Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently. 
  2. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers and community.
  3. Good written and verbal communication skills are essential.

  9. Must possess strong organization skills and be entrepreneurial, energetic, and imaginative. 
  10. Good verbal and written communications skills are essential. 
  11. Skilled in the use of a variety of machines, including, but not limited to, power tools, basic lawn care power tools, chainsaws, radio, laptop computers, telephone, calculators, copiers and smart phones.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to operate various machines, drive vehicles and/or equipment; and reach with hands and arms.  The employee frequently is required to talk and hear.  The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to (80) eighty pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT              

The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Outdoor environment; exposure to conditions of construction and Public Works project sites including loud noises, dust, heavy vehicles and equipment; exposure to inclement weather; exposure to traffic and other hazards while conducting field inspections; exposure to moving vehicles and equipment, slippery surfaces, and other related conditions.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS                                  

  1. Inspects equipment and vehicles to ensure proper and safe function and Reports malfunctions to fleet and supervisors immediately
  2. Drive and maneuver equipment, move levers, push pedals, or turn valves to activate power equipment
  3. Coordinate machine actions with crew members in response to hand or audio signals, ensure that safety standards are met when operating equipment
  4. Cleans, repairs, and maintains curbs, gutters, inlets, outfalls, debris-separators, storm-water, manholes, ditches, drainage systems, and other related public infrastructure.
  5. Uses basic hand tools such as shovels, rakes or machetes.  Operates various equipment to clean storm-water structures; lay pipelines and sets manholes; remove brush and mow high grass and weeds; picks up litter and debris; cleans in and around storm-water structures and reports and repairs erosion near and around stormwater infrastructure.
  6. Works safely when working in close proximity to high-speed vehicle traffic areas; along medians, right of ways.
  7. Prepares for daily tasks promptly through loading tools and materials each morning; cleaning each after use and returning tools and materials to their assigned storage area(s.)
  8. Works with crew-leader and supervisor to eliminate potential hazards, liability exposures, problem areas, inquiries of the general public, and the status of work activities.
  9. Conducts daily inspections and preventative maintenance measures of vehicles, equipment, and tools such as checking fluid levels, cleaning, checking safe and proper operation, and servicing.
  10. Adheres to departmental, personnel and safety rules and regulations.
  11. Helps set up proper work zones using cones and barricades to ensure public safety at all times.
  12. Creates and/or updates manual or online work order system as directed by Crew Leader or supervisor.
  13. Candidate will be required to be on-call during certain periods including Winter Operation activities and any event requiring Essential Personnel such as street sanding or brining and respond to work orders and requests after hours and on weekends when on-call.
