JOB SUMMARY
The Little Elm Police Department has established a Reserve Police Officer Program to supplement the personnel resources of the department. This established reserve force is comprised of dedicated members of the community who oftentimes possess a special knowledge or ability of interest to both the department and law enforcement as a whole. The Reserve Police Officer force, therefore, is a valued asset of the Little Elm Police Department because it compliments the overall abilities and services provided to the community by the department’s employees. Reserve police officers, like their regular officer counterparts, possess full authority when they are called to service by the Chief of Police or his designee. Consequently, Reserve Police Officers will be expected to perform their duties in an efficient, lawful manner, and each member of the reserve force will be held to the same standards of conduct and responsibility as imposed upon all full-time sworn police personnel.
 
EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE
All Reserve Police Officers are required to undergo initial and continuous training to achieve and maintain certain standards of proficiency in their job related duties. This training will typically consist of those same courses required of all full-time police officers. At minimum, additionally, Reserve Police Officers will be required to conform with T.C.O.L.E. standards for reserve police officers in effect at the time of inquiry.
 
LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES
A Reserve Officer must:
1.            Must possess a current basic certificate from TCOLE
2.            Have successfully completed the state mandated training for Reserve Officers as set out by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education (TCOLE) and possess a current Reserve or Peace Officer License.
3.            Be appointed as a Reserve Law Enforcement Officer under the provisions of Local Government Code 341.012.
4.            Must possess valid Texas Class C Drivers License
 
LANGUAGE SKILLS
1.            Must be able to read and write the English language.
 
OTHER SKILLS & ABILITIES
1.            Possess a thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations of the department.
2.            Exhibit a thorough knowledge of approved principles, practices and procedures of police service.
3.            Display a thorough knowledge of applicable state laws, municipal ordinances and court decisions that affect law enforcement investigations.
4.            Possess the physical and mental ability to complete all the work of a patrol officer.
5.            Possess a thorough understanding of and commitment to the department’s principal mission as encompassed in the Little Elm Police Department Mission Statement.
6.            Must be able to proficiently read and write the English language.
 
REASONING ABILITY
The reasoning abilities of a Reserve Police Officer must conform to those standards promulgated in the standards for full-time police officers.
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical abilities of a Reserve Police Officer must conform to those standards promulgated in the standards for full-time police officers.
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT
All Reserve Police Officers must serve a minimum of 12 hours of duty per calendar month. Reserve Officers who are unable to meet this requirement must submit a written request through the chain of command to the Chief of Police for an approved leave of absence. Unless otherwise assigned or detailed by the Chief of Police, a Reserve Police Officer can expect to encounter the same working conditions and exposures as outlined for full-time police officers.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS  
Unless otherwise assigned by the Chief of Police, a Reserve Police Officer will be expected to perform all of the same duties of a full-time police officer in the Patrol Division. An itemized listing of those duties typically required to be performed may be reviewed in the job description for Police Officers.
