JOB SUMMARY

Under supervision of the Street Division Supervisor, the purpose of the position is to install, repair, fabricate, and maintain all types of signs and markings, flashers including RRFB/School Zone Flashers, and Town owned street lights in accordance with Town, State, and Federal standards. Employees in this class exercise appropriate safety precautions when operating assigned equipment to ensure personal, public, and personnel safety. Position is responsible for working independently or as part of a work crew, depending on nature of assigned tasks. The employee performs related work as directed and provide assistance to the Street Division as directed. EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or GED

One year of experience in signs and markings, that demonstrates ability to fulfill the physical requirements of the essential functions; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Preference given on previous sign making or work zone layout experience.

Preference given to experience working on right-of-way lighting.

 

LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES

  1. Preference given for International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level I Signs and Markings Certification
  2. Ability to acquire IMSA Level I Signs and Markings Certification within three years of employment.
  3. Requires Class “A” Texas Commercial Driver’s License or ability to acquire within 6 months.

  3. Good written and verbal communication skills are essential.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to operate various machines, drive vehicles and/or equipment; and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or climb. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to (80) eighty pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Outdoor environment; exposure to conditions of construction and Public Works project sites including loud noises, dust, heavy vehicles and equipment; exposure to inclement weather; exposure to traffic and other hazards while conducting field inspections; exposure to moving vehicles and equipment, slippery surfaces, and other related conditions. Operate a bucket truck safely in a work zone along roadways.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Installs, repairs, maintains, and fabricates all regulatory, warning, construction, guide, and special signs in accordance with the Texas and Federal Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD & MUTCD).
  2. Completes daily reports on all field activities, dispatched calls, work orders, service request and provides information for cost analysis reports utilizing MyGov computer work order system or other applicable software systems.
  3. Performs layout procedures for pavement markings such as thermoplastic, paint, buttons; including preparation work such as grinding and sealer application; and applies to roadways using epoxy, approved adhesives, or applicable markings equipment.
  4. Sets out work zone for job site in accordance with the TMUTCD and MUTCD.
  5. Programs and deploys traffic counters and analyzers, changeable message boards, and school zone flashers.
  6. Performs traffic movement counts utilizing hand counter as necessary.
  7. Constructs and installs traffic barricades at appropriate locations.
  8. Trims trees that are obstructing traffic signs or conflicting with traffic thoroughfares and vision.
  9. Utilizes Texas Standard Highway Design Manual to fabricate signs.
  10. Identifies and reports visibility obstructions that pose traffic hazards.
  11. Maintains stock levels on trucks and in shop per the supervisor’s direction and restocks as necessary.
  12. Maintains an inventory of maintenance and operational supplies, tools, equipment, etc., and services on a routine basis.
  13. Performs vehicle inspection and preventative maintenance of vehicle and equipment.
  14. Informs supervisor of potential hazards, problem areas, citizen inquires, and all work activities.
  15. Adheres to personnel, safety, and departmental policies and procedures.
  16. May be required to take the lead or assist in the fabrication, installation, repair and maintenance of school zone flasher/signals, RRFB and street signs/markings.
  17. May be required to assist with special events in the areas of traffic control.
  18. Position requires employee to perform emergency on-call duty.
  19. Performs other duties as assigned.
