JOB SUMMARY

Under direction of the Library Manager, the Youth Services Librarian provides excellent customer service to children, young adults, and adults by providing dynamic youth programs, reference and reader’s advisory assistance, and collection development, and participates in community-wide efforts in support of area youth.

 

EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE

  1. MLS/MLIS/MIS from an American Library Association accredited college or university program.
  2. Experience with library youth programs and collection development.
  3. Ability to develop new and innovative youth programming.

 

 

LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES

  1. Must be bondable.
  2. Possess a valid Texas Drivers License.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  1. Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
  2. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or authorities, or members of the local business community.
  3. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  4. Ability to speak other languages desirable.

 

OTHER SKILLS & ABILITIES

  1. Ability to work with a team, take initiative and is detail oriented to organize work effectively.
  2. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with patrons and co-workers.
  3. Must have excellent customer service skills.
  4. Ability to perform tasks under pressure with short deadlines.
  5. Considerable knowledge, skill, and ability in public library operations.
  6. Ability to work flexible hours as necessary.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to operate various machines and/or equipment; and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and be able to push and pull up to 150 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Primarily office environment.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

 

  1. Oversees and executes programs for children, youth, and teens.
  2. Selects, orders, and maintains materials for children and young adult materials collections.
  3. Assists the public by telephone, email, in person, or virtually with reference questions.
  4. Works some evenings and weekends.
  5. Assists with adult programs and projects as needed.
  6. Picks up and re-shelves stray materials and straightens library furnishings.
  7. Attends periodic staff meetings and training opportunities.

9. Provides reports to the Director.

10. Develops and implements projects for continued improvement of the library.

11. Operates under the general direction of the director, making recommendations regarding library outreach.

12. Visits local schools and other area youth centers to market library programs, services, and materials.

13. Partner with LEISD to create cooperative programs that provide student materials and opportunities in the Public Library.

14. Performs other related duties as assigned.
