JOB SUMMARY
The Student Volunteer assists The Police Department with community outreach events, crime prevention education, and observes Police Department operations.
This position is designed for an enthusiastic and responsible high school student volunteer to assist with community outreach and administrative tasks. This role provides valuable hands-on experience in public service and offers a unique opportunity to engage with community members while supporting the department’s mission. The Student Volunteer would be expected to embrace and be motivated to accept new challenges, find creative solutions to customer’s needs, take ownership and pride by demonstrating the Town of Little Elm’s Core Values of Integrity, Customer Service, Efficiency and Innovation.
EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE
This position is designed for a student currently enrolled in a high school law enforcement program.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
- Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
- Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or authorities, or members of the local business community.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Observe Police Department operations.
- Assist with the organization and maintenance of Police Department property.
- Attending project meetings and working as part of a team; and/or, performing other related activities.
- Participates in the planning, coordination, execution, and evaluation of major special events; as well as other departmental events.
- Performs a variety of administrative activities in support of departmental operations and goals.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Assists other divisions as needed.

- Knowledge of law enforcement and public service;
- Skilled in applying independent judgment, personal discretion, and resourcefulness in interpreting and applying guidelines;
- Skilled in prioritizing work;

- Skilled in recognizing problems, identifying alternative solutions, and making appropriate recommendations;
- Skilled in building consensus;
- Skilled in maintaining sensitive and confidential information;
- Skilled in operating a computer and related software applications;
- Skilled in communicating effectively with a variety of individuals.
- Successful applicant must pass a background check prior to appointment.

- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished by management in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Ability to comprehend complex laws, policies, procedures, regulations, and organizational structures.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by a volunteer to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the volunteer is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to operate various machines and/or equipment; and reach with hands and arms. The volunteer frequently is required to talk and hear. The volunteer is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The volunteer must occasionally lift and/or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds and be able to push and pull up to fifty (50) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those aa volunteer encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Work is typically performed in standard work environment and could include working in an outdoor environment, with potential exposure to adverse weather conditions.
