Description

JOB SUMMARY

Under direct supervision, operates various light to heavy equipment used to excavate, load, transfer, or move dirt, gravel or other materials in the maintenance or construction of drainage, streets, brush collection, dump truck for winter operations and various equipment to construct, repair and maintain the Town’s street and sidewalk systems, and other related public infrastructure. Required to remove debris, fallen trees and limbs; replace street signs during or after hazardous weather or other emergencies.  Essential employees in this class exercise appropriate safety precautions when operating assigned equipment to ensure personal, public, and personnel safety. Position is responsible for working independently or as part of a work crew, depending on nature of assigned tasks.  Position requires employee to perform emergency and on-call duty.  The employee performs related work as directed and provides assistance to the Solid Waste Division as directed. Candidate may be required to participate in an operator dig skills exam in the field in addition to the formal interview.  The candidate must be highly motivated and strive for success by demonstrating Little Elm’s Core Values of Integrity, Customer Service, Efficiency, and Innovation.

 

EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE

  1. High School Diploma/GED
  2. Two (2) years’ experience in a municipal setting preferred with the ability to obtain a TEEX heavy equipment operator license within 18 months.

 

LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES

  1. Texas Driver’s License – must have a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (“CDL”)

  1. Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
  2. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or authorities, or members of the local business community.  Candidate must have the ability to communicate effectively with city staff, supervisors.

  9. Must have the ability to perform tasks and supervise multiple projects under pressure, with short deadlines and the ability to work overtime and flexible hours as necessary.
  10. Skilled in the use of a variety of machines, including, but not limited to, radio, personal computers, laptops, telephone, calculators, facsimile machine, copiers and smartphones.
  11. Ability to establish and maintain good relationships with supervisors and other personnel as well as a willingness to perform duties in a team environment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to operate various machines, drive vehicles and/or equipment, and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is frequently required to talk and hear.  The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to (80) eighty pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT  

The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Work is performed in a standard office environment, and field environment at work sites. Work schedule may include after hours, weekends and holidays. Must be able to respond to after hour emergencies as needed. Work rotating and rotating on-call duty as required.  Light and Heavy equipment operators work in nearly every type of climate and weather condition.  Workers often get dirty, greasy, muddy, or dusty.  The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Outdoor environment; exposure to conditions of construction and Public Works project sites including loud noises, dust, heavy vehicles and equipment; exposure to inclement weather; exposure to traffic and other hazards while conducting field inspections; exposure to moving vehicles and equipment, slippery surfaces, and other related conditions.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS       

  1. Knowledge and ability to follow Town policies and procedures.
  2. Ability to maintain accurate and complete records.  Completes daily reports on all field activities, dispatched calls, work orders, service request and provides information for cost analysis reports utilizing MyGov computer work order system or other applicable software systems.
  3. Conducts daily inspections and preventative maintenance measures of vehicles, light and heavy equipment, such as checking fluid levels, cleaning, checking safe and proper operation, and servicing.
  4. Cleans and maintains equipment prior to and after operation daily.
  5. Report malfunctions to fleet and supervisors
  6. Move levers, push pedals, or turn valves to activate power equipment
  7. Drive and maneuver equipment, coordinate machine actions with crew members in response to hand or audio signals, ensure that safety standards are met when operating equipment
  8. Construction operation related to concrete and asphalt removal and basic earth moving is required.
  9. Operates, repairs, and maintains various light to heavy equipment, vehicles, such as tractors, mowers, front end and back end loaders, track-hoes, street sweepers, bucket trucks, augers maintainers, blades, jackhammers, rollers, dump trucks, motor graders, skill saws, drills, bolt cutters, and other 1 ton to 5 ton vehicles, etc.
  10. Works safely when working in close proximity to high-speed vehicle traffic areas; along medians, right of ways.
  11. Loads and unloads supplies, equipment, and tools, etc., on and off of vehicles and equipment.
  12. Works with crew-leader and supervisor to eliminate potential hazards, liability exposures, problem areas, inquiries of the general public, and the status of work activities.
  13. Adheres to departmental, personnel and safety rules, procedures and regulations.
  14. Helps set up proper work zones using cones and barricades to ensure public safety at all times.
  15. Acts as lead in directing work crews in the absence of a crew leader.
  16. Performs vehicle inspection and preventative maintenance of vehicle and equipment.
  17. Informs supervisor of potential hazards, problem areas, citizen inquires, and all work activities.
  18. Required to assist with all special events in the areas of traffic control.
  19. Candidate will be required to be on-call during certain periods including winter operation activities and any event requiring essential personnel such as street sanding or brining and respond to work orders and requests after hours and on weekends when on-call.
  20. Performs other duties as assigned.
