JOB SUMMARY

Protects life and property through emergency incident intervention; provides advanced life support emergency medical service.  Conducts community service activities including community education, commercial inspection.  Ensures readiness through facility, apparatus, equipment, and personal maintenance.  Performs general administrative functions.  Completes special projects or tasks which further the departmental mission.

The intent of this position description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbent(s) in this position. EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE

Must Possess State Approved Basic Structural Firefighting Certification and hold Paramedic certification.  No experience required. Requires High School Diploma or GED.

 

LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES

1.             Must be bondable.

2.             TCFP Basic Firefighter Certification

3.             TDSHS Paramedic or NREMT-Paramedic

4.             Must obtain Class-B drivers license within 6 months of hire date.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

1.             Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently. 

2.             Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or authorities, or members of the local business community.

 

OTHER SKILLS & ABILITIES

1.             Ability to establish and meet deadlines.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pulling, lifting, talking, hearing, and perform repetitive motions. Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to (80) eighty pounds of force occasionally, (40) forty pounds frequently, and (25) twenty five pounds of force constantly.  Must possess the visual acuity to perform accounting, computer work, and extensive reading in addition to operating vehicles and equipment. Subject to hazards associated with fire fighting including working in both inside and outside environments, including all types of weather conditions, and exposure to smoke and high heat. Work may be in high areas or in close quarters. Possible exposure to electrical current, chemicals, and blood-born pathogens.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT  

The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  The job is primarily a field environment where you may encounter dangerous environments including, but not limited to, atmospheres containing extreme heat, driving under stressful situations, rescue incidents involving dangerous situations, or emergency medical incidents where one could come in contact with communicable diseases.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS                      

1.             Protects life and property through emergency incident response by performing firefighting operations including deploying and operating hoses, pumping apparatus, directing water streams or other chemicals and raising and climbing unsupported ladders including ground and aerial of up to 100 feet and rescue incident scene activities with trapped or injured persons including swift water rescue work with and without the use of a boat, providing emergency medical care at the EMT-P level and transporting patients.

2.             Operates numerous types of rescue, salvage, emergency and fire suppression equipment as necessary

3.             Provides community services by presenting community education and/or school-based education programs, providing emergency medical standby and public relations services at town special events, providing a variety of non-emergency services including vehicle lockouts and smoke detector checks, and conducting commercial fire safety inspections.

4.             Performs facility, apparatus, equipment and personal maintenance by participating in health/wellness and physical conditioning programs, performing routine vehicle inspections and minor vehicle maintenance, performing daily station cleaning and grounds maintenance, conducting routine maintenance and inspection of a variety of emergency service equipment.

5.             Maintains emergency service skill levels by participating in regularly scheduled skill based training exercises, participating in a variety of continuing education programs, and reviewing current emergency service professional journals and technical literature.

6.             Performs general administrative functions by completing special projects or tasks such as mapping, facility construction, and support service activities, completing patient encounter forms and hospital related reporting, completing incident response data entry, and finalizing various maintenance logs and request forms.

7.             Maintains contact with medical facility to prepare for patient arrival

8.             Oversees the work of the Fire Department personnel as necessary during medical emergencies.

9.             Performs and/or oversees triage operations

10.           Evaluates patient’s condition and determines treatment in accordance with paramedic policies and procedures

11.           Operates ambulances and all related medical care equipment

12.           Communicates with dispatch and command personnel through the use of specialized communications equipment such as two way radio systems, data link in stations to administration and dispatch

13.           Listens for victims at fire and accident scenes, communications from other firefighters and superiors, etc

14.           Works shift schedules including weekends, holidays and extended hours in emergency, disaster or other situations included by workload or staffing difficulties

15.           Interprets and explains Town and department policies and procedures for the public

16.           Works under stress and uses good judgment in emergency situations

17.           Prepares and maintains records regarding status of hydrant maintenance

18.           Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships

19.           Tactfully responds to request and inquiries from general public, other department personnel, and other Town employees
