JOB SUMMARY

Essential job function training is delivered by Public Works staff to provide you with the skill set to saw cut, pull, form, pour and finish concrete projects utilizing a combination of hand tools, gas powered tools as well as heavy equipment. Under direct supervision and training by the Streets Crew Leader, the purpose of the position is to assist with repair and replacement of streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, stormwater intlets and outfalls in order to maintain the integrity of the Town’s infrastructure.  Public Works First Responders also assist PD and Fire with emergency traffic control operations and special events hosted by the Town. Essential employees exercise appropriate safety precautions in operating assigned equipment to ensure personal, public, and work zone safety. This position is responsible for working independently or as part of a work crew depending on nature of assigned tasks. This position also requires an individual to be on-call during certain periods and respond to requests after hours if necessary. EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or GED; with six (6) months of previous work experience that demonstrates ability and desire to fulfill the physical requirements of the essential functions; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

 

LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES

Must obtain a Class “A” Texas Commercial Driver’s License within 6-months of date of hire.

  3. Good written and verbal communication skills are essential.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to operate various machines, drive vehicles and/or equipment; and reach with hands and arms.  The employee frequently is required to talk and hear.  The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to (80) eighty pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT          

The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Outdoor environment; exposure to conditions of construction and Public Works project sites including loud noises, dust, heavy vehicles and equipment; exposure to inclement weather; exposure to traffic and other hazards while conducting field inspections; exposure to moving vehicles and equipment, slippery surfaces, and other related conditions.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS                  

  1. Performs streets maintenance and repairs in both asphalt and concrete mediums; including mixing concrete by hand when applicable, as well as manual lay down of cold mix asphalt when needed.
  2. Prepares for daily tasks promptly through loading tools and materials each morning; cleaning each after use and returning tools and materials to their assigned storage area(s.)
  3. Creates and/or updates online work order system as directed by Crew Leader or Supervisor.
  4. Informs Supervisor of potential hazards, problem areas, citizen inquires, and all work activities.
  5. Prepares assigned equipment for safe and efficient operating condition by inspecting prior to and after use.
  6. Participates in traffic control activities and assists with set up proper work zones using cones and barricades to ensure public safety at all times.  Required to assist with all special events in the areas of traffic control, including some holidays.
  7. Utilizes various manual, gas, and hand-held tools and equipment in maintenance and repair tasks, i.e., shovels, rakes, brooms, saws, hammers, wrenches.
  8. Utilizes various vehicles and equipment in maintenance and repair tasks as needed, i.e., service trucks, front end loaders, skid steers, compactors, bucket trucks and backhoes.
  9. Conducts daily inspections and preventive maintenance measures of vehicles, equipment, and tools such as checking fluid levels, cleaning, checking safe and proper operation, and servicing.
  10. Required to remove debris, fallen trees and limbs; replace street signs during or after hazardous weather or other emergencies.
  11. Cleans/clears debris and refuse from work areas; repairs landscaping around work zone backfilling with dirt and placing grass or sod where applicable.
  12. Works with crew-leader and supervisor to eliminate potential hazards, liability exposures, problem areas, inquiries of the general public, and the status of work activities.
  13. Adheres to departmental, personnel and safety rules and regulations.
  14. Candidate will be required to be on-call during certain periods including Winter Operation activities or any event requiring Essential Personnel such as street sanding or brining and respond to work orders and requests after hours and on weekends when on-call.
  15. Performs other duties as assigned.
